Inauguration

January 21, 2013 PoliticsVanilla Life  4 comments

What else could I post about today?

I hadn’t planned to watch the inauguration in particular, but it was on and then came the inaugural address.

I did not believe I would live to see a black president, at least not for another 20 years.

I know, I know, he’s half black, what the fuck ever.  His wife is black, his children are black and I don’t give a shit what the idiotic and asinine birthers think, or say.

He’s not the first black man for whom I voted for President.  I voted for Jessie Jackson in 1988.

I just looked up Jessie’s speech, his Common Ground speech, and what both slave drew and I were most struck by was how similar it was to the inaugural address to day.

If you’d like to read it, the text of the speech is here, but I’m going to quote a few parts of it:

America’s not a blanket...

So we had our SIG meeting this afternoon and the topic, which had been requested in our topic listing, was Leather History.

I did a bit of prep for the meeting, which included going through the Leather Archives and Museum Leather History Timeline.  If you’re interested you can find that here.

I pulled out items that I thought were particularly interesting from that time line:

1954:    Satyrs MC founded in Los Angeles, the first gay motorcycle club.

1955, Sept. 21:    The Daughters of Bilitis, the first Lesbian organization in America, is formed in San Francisco.

1958:    Oedipus MC founded in Los Angeles, the second gay motorcycle club.

1958, June:    Chuck Renslow becomes manager of The Gold Coast in Chicago and creates the first Leather Bar.

1960, March 16:    The Gold Coast...

Perfection

January 19, 2013 DominanceRelationshipsSubmissives  5 comments

jade, over at The Chrysanthemum and The Sword, wrote an interesting post – well, I find that many of the posts she writes are particularly interesting.

Anyway, she talked about “The Perfect Slave,” and “The Perfect Master.”

Perfection has honestly never been that appealing to me.

I think, for one thing, that I would find perfection in a slave somewhat intimidating.

If, for instance, you’re a perfect slave but I find a flaw – I don’t like the way you fold my towels or the food you cook – then doesn’t that rather imply the flaw is with me?

If you’re perfect, then I have to be perfect, too.

And I am not perfect, nor do I aspire to be.

I aspire to be many things, a kind person, a good leader, a wise dominant, but I do not aspire to be perfect.

Perfection is so confining...

Fairness is Coming

January 18, 2013 In the NewsVanilla Life  9 comments

slave drew pointed out a story to me today in the local paper, the Courier-Journal.

The online link to the story, Kentucky — it’s a state of Fairness, is here, but I want to quote some of it, too.

“As our coalition of organizations has worked across the commonwealth over the past several years to advance lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) anti-discrimination protections, that’s what we’ve been hearing. Most folks seem to agree everyone deserves the opportunity to earn a living, put a roof over their head, and eat at their favorite restaurant without the fear of being turned away just because of who they are.

This week Vicco, a small Appalachian town of just over 330 residents, confirmed everything we’ve heard by becoming the fourth municipality in Kentucky and smallest ...

Titleholder Prep

January 17, 2013 Bluegrass Leather PrideLeather Contests  No comments

We did our first Titleholder Preparation for the new year tonight.

We met at the local pizza joint where we’ve been doing munches for 15 years.  They give the basement over to us, and generally let us do pretty much whatever we want to do.

We had four people who are planning to run for my titles, and a couple that are preparing for international contests.

We talked about what good reasons are to run for a title, because you think you have something to say, because you want a platform, because you want to serve your community.

We talked about issues to consider like, can you afford to run for a title financially, can you afford it in terms of the time you have available, can your relationships afford it?

We talked about recognizing that running for a title almost always leads to at least s...

My Day

My day has been pleasantly quiet, generally.

I had a late breakfast with a submissive male who is a friend, too, and is always interesting.  We chatted about art, about the current political debates, and compartmentalization in our respective lives.

After that, I came home and spent the rest of the afternoon going through email, answering emails in my normal account and my Fetlife account, making some reservations for upcoming events, and working on my Bluegrass Leather Pride contest.

Then I joined a group of friends to celebrate a birthday, which was fun.

Working on Bluegrass Leather and some on Great Lakes Leather Alliance is going to be my day tomorrow, too, and I hope to have many of the details ironed out tomorrow.

This is, then, going to be short and not that exciting, because I nee...

Passages

January 15, 2013 MemoriesRelationshipsVanilla Life  13 comments

It has been a strange few days in several ways.

I had gotten a letter earlier this week from the daughter of a woman I grew up with.  She was a friend of my mother’s, though, over time, she became more a friend of mine.

I had visited her when we were on our honeymoon and went back to my hometown.  She was Portuguese in heritage, and an artist.  She and her husband owned a little junk shop in the town I grew up in, a place that we visited regularly.

She sold comics and books and I remember taking old ones in and trading them for different used books and comics.

It was in her store that I clearly remember seeing a rhinestone brooch and telling my mother how pretty it would be on a black dress.

I was all of nine or ten and I remember my mother saying, “But you don’t HAVE a black dress.”

I ...

I am going to post tonight something I wrote earlier today.

The minister who married us is leaving the church.

Yes, I was married in a church and the ceiling did not fall down on us.

I wore a leather pillbox hat and leather gloves I’d been given as a piece of earned leather.

I’m not really a Christian at all – I don’t honestly know how I’d define myself, it changes nearly daily.  But we both wanted a fairly traditional ceremony, none of the unity candle and vows we wrote ourselves.

slave drew grew up in an Episcopalian church, and that was where we went to be married.

We were very lucky, our minister was a lovely man, and a wonderful speaker, and is now leaving us for the greener pastures I always knew would beckon.

We in the congregation were asked to write something for him to...

One of Those Days

Ever have one of those days?

It began with a LARGE dog mess that had to be cleaned up.  A mess that spanned two rooms.  First thing.

I’ve worked on laundry all day, which I honestly don’t mind, but it’s been a lot of steps up and down stairs, since the laundry is in the basement.  There has also been moving the clean clothes up to the upstairs, another flight.

I feel as though I’ve been doing a stair master all day, and while that’s not bad, my joints are beginning to protest.

I had another mess to clean up when the big plastic container of liquid laundry detergent somehow fell off the dryer, breaking the screw top, and spewing a certain amount of soap over the dryer, the washer, and some of the clean clothes.

Then there was the large pool of detergent on the floor.

I got it cleaned up,...

Post Party

January 12, 2013 Bluegrass Leather PrideFringe ElementsKink CommunityKink EventsPlay Parties  5 comments

Had I been smart, I would have written a blog post before heading out to the Fringe Elements Taster’s Choice party last night.

I thought of that about the same time I realized that I had forgotten the mascara.  It was too late to go back and do it by then.

So the party went well.  We had about 120 people, which is a good sized party.  Our class lineup was Rope Bondage by Robyn, Boot Massage by Bootblack Bella, Therapeutic Massage by Kristin, Intro to Canes by Ms Constance – yours truly – Intro to Flogging by GypsyPony, Hot Safe Sex by Leather Queer, Intro to Electrical Play by Sir Russ, Intro to Knife Play by Sir Charles, Rough Body Play by Walter Sobchak, Intro to Needles by Ms Tammy, Intro to Littles Play by Johnnie and Maggie, and Massage for Doms by Shawna the Dead.

Most classes ran...
